AEO & GEO

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what is the difference and what do you need?

Search now happens in results pages, answer boxes and AI chat tools. Here is how SEO, AEO and GEO differ, and where a business should start.

For years, “search” meant a list of ten blue links. Today the same question might be answered in an answer box at the top of Google, read aloud by a voice assistant, summarized in an AI Overview or answered in a chat with ChatGPT or Perplexity. New terms have appeared to describe the work of being visible in each place: SEO, AEO and GEO.

They are related, they overlap a lot, and they are not three separate projects. Here is what each one means.

SEO: Search Engine Optimization

The goal: rank your pages in search results so people click through to your site.

SEO covers three areas that depend on each other:

  • Technical SEO: search engines can crawl, render and index your pages, and the site is fast and secure.
  • On-page SEO: each page clearly answers a specific need, with helpful content and sensible structure.
  • Off-page SEO: other relevant websites reference you, which builds authority.

SEO is the foundation for everything else in this article. Answer engines and AI tools often find information through search indexes, so a site that is weak in SEO is usually weak in the other two as well.

AEO: Answer Engine Optimization

The goal: have your content chosen as the direct answer to a question, in featured snippets, “People also ask” panels, voice assistants and AI Overviews.

AEO is about format and clarity as much as authority. In practice it means:

  • Researching the real questions your customers ask.
  • Answering each one directly and early, then adding the detail.
  • Using clear headings, short definitions, steps and tables that are easy to extract.
  • Adding structured data where it accurately describes the page.

The trade-off: for very simple questions, people may get the answer without clicking. For anything more involved, being the visible source builds recognition and brings the clicks that matter.

GEO: Generative Engine Optimization

The goal: make your business easy for AI tools to understand, trust and mention when they write an answer.

When someone asks an AI tool “which agency should I use for…” or “what is the best software for…”, the answer draws on many sources: your website, review platforms, directories, articles and forums. GEO focuses on:

  • Entity clarity: your business name, services, location and people described consistently everywhere.
  • Citable content: specific, accurate statements rather than vague marketing claims.
  • Corroboration: credible third-party mentions that confirm what your site says.
  • Technical access: pages that can be fetched and read, and sensible decisions about AI crawlers.

How they compare

SEO AEO GEO
Where you appear Search results Answer boxes, voice, AI Overviews AI chat and AI search answers
Main lever Relevance, technical health, authority Clear, well-structured answers Consistent, credible presence across sources
How you measure it Rankings, organic traffic, leads Answer placements, question-search impressions Mentions across a fixed set of AI prompts, AI referral traffic

What should a business focus on first?

For almost every business, the order is:

  1. Get SEO fundamentals right. A technically sound site with helpful content is the base for everything else.
  2. Structure your key content for answers (AEO). This is often a relatively small change to pages you already have, and it helps human readers too.
  3. Strengthen your wider presence (GEO). Make your business information consistent, earn mentions in credible places and publish content worth citing.

A note on promises

Nobody can guarantee a featured snippet, an AI Overview mention or a recommendation from ChatGPT. These systems choose sources per query and change often. Anyone promising guaranteed AI visibility is guessing. What you can do is improve the signals they rely on, and measure the trend over time.

If you want to know how your business currently appears in AI answers, we can run an AI visibility review. To make your existing content easier to use as an answer, see our AEO service. And if the foundations need work first, start with SEO.
